Store building
Shopify or WooCommerce? How growing brands should choose
By the Neek Web team 2 min read
Shopify and WooCommerce power a large share of independent online stores. Both can run a successful business. The right choice depends less on features and more on how your team works.
The short comparison
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Included and managed | You arrange it |
| Software updates | Handled by Shopify | Your responsibility |
| Customisation | Themes and apps, with limits | Almost unlimited with code |
| Costs | Monthly plan, apps and transaction fees | Hosting, premium plugins and developer time |
| Best for | Teams that want to focus on selling | Teams that want full control |
When Shopify is the better fit
Shopify suits brands that want to spend their time on products and marketing rather than on servers. Hosting, security patches and checkout reliability are handled for you, and the app store covers most needs, from reviews to subscriptions.
The trade-off is cost and control. Monthly app fees add up, and some parts of checkout and the data model can only be changed in the ways Shopify allows.
When WooCommerce is the better fit
WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so it suits businesses that publish a lot of content, already have a WordPress site or need custom product logic that a hosted platform would restrict.
The trade-off is responsibility. Someone has to choose good hosting, keep WordPress and plugins updated, monitor security and test checkout after changes. Without that, WooCommerce stores slow down and break over time.
Questions to ask before you choose
- Who will maintain the store? If the answer is "nobody in particular", lean towards Shopify.
- How custom is your catalogue? Complex bundles, configurators or trade pricing can push you towards WooCommerce.
- Which marketplaces will you sell on? Both platforms connect to major marketplaces, but check that the integration you need is well supported and fits your budget.
- What will it cost over three years? Add platform fees, apps or plugins, hosting and developer time, not just the first month.
Moving between platforms later
You are not locked in forever. Products, customers and order history can usually be migrated, and careful redirects protect your search rankings. It is still easier to choose well at the start.
